NWS Confirms 14 Tornadoes Across Indiana in March

The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed a total of at least 14 tornadoes in Indiana for March 2025, fueled by severe spring storms. Among these, six tornadoes were reported during a storm on March 19, including two EF-0 tornadoes near Gary and Highland, and an EF-2 tornado that caused significant damage in Bartholomew County. In addition, the NWS confirmed multiple tornadoes in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana, including an EF-1 tornado in Gary that resulted in substantial damage to local schools. While this year's tornado count is notably higher than the average of 2-3 for March, it remains far below Indiana's record of 72 tornadoes set in 2011. Weather officials continue to assess the damage and monitor for any additional tornado activity as severe weather patterns persist. Overall, most of the tornadoes have occurred in rural areas and have been less destructive compared to those seen in southern states.
