Two Athletes Die at Triathlon in Spain
Mark Stokes, a 57-year-old British triathlete, and Roger Mas, a 79-year-old Mexican athlete, both died from heart attacks during the World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain, on October 17. Stokes collapsed during the running segment of the race, while Mas suffered a heart attack in the swimming leg shortly before. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate Stokes, but he could not be saved, and he passed away just minutes before Mas. Both competitors were participating in the veteran category, which involved a 750-metre swim, a 12-mile cycle, and a three-mile run. The governing body, World Triathlon, expressed its condolences and stated it is supporting the families of the deceased. The event attracted over 5,500 athletes from more than 80 countries, emphasizing its international significance.
