Bronglais Opens £3m Cancer Unit Sussex Cancer Centre Planning Approved

Two major cancer care developments have recently been approved and are underway in the UK. At Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, a new £3 million Leri Cancer Unit has opened, doubling the space of the old chemotherapy facility and providing a dedicated specialist unit, which has been a community-driven effort funded largely through charitable fundraising since 2021. Meanwhile, in Sussex, planning permission has been granted for a state-of-the-art, five-storey Sussex Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, designed to significantly expand cancer services and accommodate the increasing patient demand. The Sussex centre will triple current cancer care capacity, reduce waiting times, and include more inpatient beds with single en-suite rooms, a dedicated acute cancer assessment unit, and spaces designed to support patients' emotional wellbeing, emphasizing a healing environment with natural light and gardens. Construction of the Sussex centre is expected to start in 2026 with completion targeted for 2029, and it will also serve as a research hub to facilitate cutting-edge clinical trials and specialist services closer to home. Both projects reflect a broader commitment to enhancing cancer treatment facilities, improving patient experience, and supporting the whole person beyond medical treatment.
