United Torah Judaism Quits Netanyahu Coalition Over Army Enlistment Exemptions
The ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party, including its Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael factions, has resigned from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government in protest over a proposed conscription bill that they argue unfairly targets yeshiva students. UTJ leaders threatened to quit the coalition unless a draft bill exempting yeshiva students from military service was presented promptly, with the resignations set to take effect within 48 hours. The party accused the government of repeatedly failing to uphold commitments regarding the legal status of Torah students, and its departure followed similar pressure from the allied Shas party, which is also considering withdrawing to avoid blame for potentially toppling the government. Shas chairman Aryeh Deri has been pushing for a coordinated withdrawal, urging UTJ to lead the exit, with his party to follow, aiming to avoid responsibility for a government collapse. Despite these tensions, Prime Minister Netanyahu and senior coalition members have expressed determination to pass the conscription law and avoid the government's downfall, with discussions ongoing to finalize the draft bill. The situation remains fluid as ultra-Orthodox parties contemplate further protest measures, including partial resignations or boycotts, while the Knesset session nears its end.
