The Bombay High Court has demanded updates from the Maharashtra government regarding actions taken against police officials for lapses in the investigation of a sexual assault case involving two minor girls in Badlapur. The court noted a departmental inquiry has found one officer guilty of dereliction of duty, and a report has been sent to the police commissioner. The sexual assault occurred in August when a male attendant abused the girls inside a school toilet; public outrage led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The accused attendant was arrested but was later killed in a police shootout. The court has also directed the establishment of a committee to study child safety in schools, with its report expected by the next hearing in six weeks. Advocate General Birendra Saraf confirmed that compensation under the state's Manodhairya scheme for sexual assault victims has been disbursed to the families.
