Ancient Christian Church Found in Armenia
Archaeologists from the University of Münster and the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia have uncovered what is believed to be one of the oldest Christian churches in the world, dating back to the mid-4th century AD, at the Artaxata site in Armenia. The octagonal building, measuring approximately 100 feet in diameter, features cruciform extensions and marble fragments indicating lavish decorations. This discovery is significant as it represents the oldest archaeologically documented church in Armenia and offers insight into early Christianity in the region, which was the first Christian state established in 301 AD. The church's architecture resembles early Christian memorial structures known from the Eastern Mediterranean, highlighting its historical importance. The excavation team plans to continue their work to uncover further details about the church's identity and dedication. This find adds to the rich history of Artaxata, once the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia, known for its religious significance.
