Toms River Officer Charged in Violent Home Invasion
Rebecca Sayegh, an off-duty Toms River police officer, was arrested and charged with home invasion burglary, assault, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest after allegedly breaking into the home of a former romantic partner in Berkeley Township, New Jersey. Authorities allege that Sayegh used her baton to smash the front door, assaulted the two occupants, damaged property, and threatened to burn down the house when confronted by responding officers. She also reportedly vandalized one victim's car shortly before the incident and physically resisted arrest. Sayegh is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing, and has been suspended from the police department. The incident follows a sexual harassment lawsuit Sayegh filed against her department six months prior, in which she claimed discrimination and a hostile work environment. Toms River police have referred all inquiries to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and have declined further comment.
