Cubico Plans 17-Turbine Scout Moor II Expansion Powering 100,000 Homes

Cubico Sustainable Investments has submitted plans to add 17 new wind turbines at Scout Moor II, expanding England's largest onshore wind farm located between Rochdale and Rossendale. The new turbines, larger and more powerful than the existing 26, are expected to generate up to 100MW of clean electricity, capable of powering around 77% of households in the local area, or approximately 100,000 homes annually. This project marks the first new onshore wind farm proposal since planning rules were eased, reversing a previous Conservative government ban. While Cubico emphasizes the scheme's role in meeting climate goals, reducing reliance on imported energy, and enhancing homegrown renewables, local campaigners from the 'Say NO to Scout Moor 2' group express concerns about the turbines dominating the valley and potential irreversible damage to peatland due to concrete foundations. In response, Cubico has proposed a major moorland restoration program focused on peatland protection, rewetting, and habitat restoration to mitigate environmental impacts. Additionally, the developers have pledged a £20 million community wealth fund to support local projects, highlighting economic and job creation benefits.
