Raphael Named Latin Recording Academy 2025 Person of Year After Brain Lymphoma Diagnosis
Spanish singer Raphael has been named the 2025 Person of the Year by The Latin Recording Academy, in recognition of his more than six-decade career and significant influence on Spanish-language music. Despite being diagnosed with primary brain lymphoma in late 2024, the 82-year-old artist announced a return to touring with a new tour and released his latest album, 'Ayer…Aún.' Raphael's career milestones include winning Best Child Voice in Europe at age nine, competing in Eurovision in the 1960s, performing on The Ed Sullivan Show, and releasing iconic songs like "Yo Soy Aquél" and "Escándalo." He will be honored on November 12 with a star-studded gala concert during Latin GRAMMY Week in Las Vegas, featuring performances by prominent artists and friends. Raphael expressed deep gratitude for the award, describing it as a dream recognition and a celebration of his lifelong dedication to music. Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy, praised Raphael's resilience, style, and constant reinvention, highlighting his inspiration to new generations of Latin music creators.
