25 Films Added to National Film Registry 2024
The Library of Congress has announced the addition of 25 culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films to the National Film Registry for 2024, bringing the total to 900 films preserved. Notable additions include 'Dirty Dancing' (1987) and 'Beverly Hills Cop' (1984), both of which marked significant cultural moments, with 'Dirty Dancing' addressing themes like classism and antisemitism and 'Beverly Hills Cop' highlighting Eddie Murphy's rise to stardom. Other films added include 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' (1982), 'The Social Network' (2010), 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (1974), 'Mi Familia', and 'Compensation', reflecting diversity in American filmmaking with works by and about Hispanic and Black communities. The public can contribute to future selections by submitting nominations, and Turner Classic Movies will air a special showcasing some of these selected films. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden emphasized the importance of preserving these films for future generations to reflect the nation's history and culture.
