FSAI Recalls Eight Spinach, Mixed Leaves Products Over Listeria Traces
Multiple recalls of spinach, mixed leaves, and ready-made meals have been issued in Ireland due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can grow in refrigerated conditions and cause serious illness. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has identified and recalled several batches of leafy greens from producers like McCormack Family Farms and others, advising consumers not to eat these products and instructing retailers to remove them from sale and display recall notices. This outbreak follows a previous large recall of over 140 ready-made meals linked to a Listeria outbreak, which has resulted in confirmed infections and one adult death. Listeriosis symptoms can range from mild flu-like or gastrointestinal issues to severe complications, with vulnerable groups including pregnant women, babies, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals at higher risk. Investigations revealed that Listeria thrives in cold, moist environments and can persist on surfaces and in vacuum-sealed packaging, making prepackaged fresh foods like salads a significant risk if contaminated. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and emphasize the importance of proper food handling and recalls to prevent further infections.
