Molly Ringwald Critiques 'The Breakfast Club' Diversity at C2E2 Panel
During a 40th anniversary reunion panel for 'The Breakfast Club' at Chicago's C2E2 convention, Molly Ringwald expressed her opposition to remaking the 1985 film, stating it is 'very much of its time.' She acknowledged the movie's enduring resonance but highlighted its lack of diversity, noting, 'it's very white... you don't see a lot of different ethnicities. We don't talk about gender.' Ringwald emphasized that while she values films inspired by 'The Breakfast Club,' she prefers these new works address modern issues and better represent today's society. She also reflected on scenes from the original film that have not aged well, particularly regarding gender dynamics, and expressed appreciation for societal progress since then. The reunion marked the first time in 40 years the main cast appeared together in public, with Ringwald describing the experience as emotional and moving. Fellow cast member Emilio Estevez agreed that the original film would not be received the same way today due to changes in the cultural and cinematic landscape.
