Kirklees Council Submits Revised Plans to Expand Huddersfield George Hotel
Kirklees Council has submitted revised plans for the multi-million pound regeneration of the Grade II*-listed George Hotel in Huddersfield town centre, increasing the number of rooms from 90 to 108 while preserving the building's historic character. The updated scheme includes dismantling and rebuilding the hotel's façade due to structural issues, demolishing two modern blocks, and adding a new extension, with the hotel set to reopen in 2027 as a Radisson RED. The council has allocated a total budget of around £30 million, including a £9.8 million boost approved in 2024, and does not anticipate further cost increases despite previous challenges like asbestos and underpinning work. Expanding the hotel’s capacity aims to support more guests and generate income to repay the council’s investment, aligning with broader local development efforts such as the Huddersfield Blueprint master plan and major infrastructure projects like the TransPennine Route Upgrade. Councillor Graham Turner emphasized the strategic role of the George Hotel in the town’s regeneration and its potential to attract visitors and channel investment into the local economy. A decision on the latest planning application is expected by July 31.
