Archaeologists Discover 150 Ancient Skeletons Beneath Vienna Soccer Field
Construction workers renovating a soccer field in Vienna unearthed a mass grave containing the remains of approximately 150 young males, believed to be victims of a Roman-era battle dating back to between 80 and 130 A.D. The discovery, announced by the Vienna Museum, includes 129 confirmed bodies, with evidence suggesting a chaotic burial after a catastrophic military event. Archaeologists identified various battle wounds on the skeletons, indicating they died in combat rather than execution, and the haphazard burial style points to a desperate aftermath. This find is particularly significant as it represents the first known mass grave of Roman soldiers and Germanic tribes in Vienna, challenging the historical norm of cremation for Roman soldiers until the third century. Michaela Binder, the excavation leader, emphasized the uniqueness of finding dead soldiers in this context, as such discoveries are rare in Roman history. The site is being hailed as the largest find of its kind in Central Europe, offering a glimpse into ancient warfare.
