Israeli Forces Fire on Gaza Aid Crowd Killing 1, Wounding 48
At least one Palestinian was killed and 48 others wounded when a crowd overran a newly established aid distribution site in the Gaza Strip, which was set up by an Israeli and U.S.-backed foundation, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Palestinians broke through fences around the distribution hub near Rafah, with reports of Israeli tank and gunfire and military helicopters firing flares; it remains unclear whether Israeli forces, private contractors, or others fired on the crowd. The foundation denied that its contractors fired, stating they had fallen back before resuming aid operations, while Israel said its troops nearby fired warning shots. The distribution site was opened amid severe food shortages following nearly three months of Israeli border closures, causing desperation among Gaza's 2.3 million residents. The UN and other humanitarian organizations have criticized the new aid system, warning it will not meet Gaza’s needs and may facilitate Israeli control of food supplies, raising concerns about increased friction between Israeli forces and aid recipients. Separately, Israel conducted airstrikes on Yemen’s Sanaa airport, targeting aircraft used by Iran-backed Houthi rebels after missile attacks on Israel, though no casualties were reported in those strikes.
