Portland Swears In New Mayor and Council

Portland has officially entered a new chapter in its governance with the swearing-in of 12 new city council members and Mayor Keith Wilson, marking the first use of a district-based electoral system. This restructuring, resulting from a voter-approved ballot measure in 2022, aims to ensure more equitable representation across the city, addressing long-standing concerns over inclusivity. Wilson, a businessman with no prior public office experience, has pledged to confront the pressing issue of homelessness by increasing emergency shelter availability. The city council will focus on legislative functions, distinct from the individual bureau oversight seen in the previous commission system. The significant changes necessitated renovations to the 130-year-old City Hall, which now accommodates the larger council.
