Two Men Arrested Under Terrorism Act Over Omagh Attempted Murder
Two men, aged 45 and 25, have been arrested under the Terrorism Act in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, who was shot multiple times while off duty at a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone, in February 2023. The 45-year-old was detained in the Stewartstown area and the 25-year-old in West Belfast. Both have been taken to the Musgrave Serious Crime Suite in Belfast for questioning. Police also searched a property in West Belfast and seized a vehicle as part of the investigation. The attack on Caldwell occurred while he was packing up after coaching a youth football team and has been linked to dissident republican activity. Several other individuals have already been arrested and charged in relation to the shooting, and Caldwell retired from the PSNI on medical grounds last December.
