Off-Duty Suffolk Officer Charged in DWI Crash

Alexander Vargas, a 30-year-old off-duty Suffolk County police officer from Babylon assigned to the Second Precinct, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after striking 28-year-old Jorge Alfaro, who was running across New York Avenue at Carver Street in Huntington around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Alfaro was transported to Huntington Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. Vargas was suspended without pay following the incident and remained at the scene. Suffolk County Major Case Unit detectives are investigating the crash and have requested information from the public.
