UK Expands Immediate Deportation of Foreign Criminals
The UK government is expanding its 'Deport Now, Appeal Later' policy to allow immediate deportation of foreign criminals from 23 countries—up from eight—before they can file appeals in the UK, with appeal hearings to be conducted remotely from their home countries. The initiative aims to prevent foreign offenders from exploiting the appeals process, ease prison overcrowding, and save up to £600 million annually. The policy excludes those convicted of murder, terrorism, or who have received life sentences, while authorities retain the right to detain high-risk individuals. Since July 2024, nearly 5,200 foreign offenders have been deported, and the government expects up to 3,000 further early removals under the new rules. Public support remains strong, with many backing tougher action against foreign criminals. However, there are concerns that some deported offenders may evade further punishment depending on their home countries' willingness to enforce UK sentences.
