The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to vote on September 11 regarding the renewal of an arms embargo initially imposed on Sudan's Darfur region in 2004, amid calls from Human Rights Watch (HRW) for an expansion to cover the entire country. A recent HRW report indicates that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have acquired modern foreign-made weapons, including drones and anti-tank missiles, which are contributing to ongoing human rights abuses and war crimes. The conflict, which escalated in April 2023, has led to over 15,000 deaths and displaced more than 8.2 million people, marking it as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Investigations have traced these weapons to manufacturers in China, Iran, Russia, Serbia, and the UAE, despite denials from these countries regarding arms sales to Sudanese factions. The European Union has also voiced support for renewing the embargo, fearing further destabilization in the region. Analysts warn that without an expanded arms embargo, the violence and atrocities are likely to continue unabated.
