GM Confirms CarPlay, Android Auto Phaseout
General Motors will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its entire lineup over several years, following each vehicle’s refresh cycle; EVs already lost smartphone projection in 2023. CEO Mary Barra confirmed on The Verge that GM will expand its Android-based native infotainment (Ultifi/Android Automotive) to replace phone mirroring, with the platform slated to debut in 2028 starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. The system will include a Google Gemini-powered assistant, custom apps, and give GM direct control over navigation, entertainment, updates, data integration and in‑car purchases. GM says the change will reduce distracting context-switching, enable deeper vehicle integration and faster over-the-air updates, and create new monetization opportunities such as subscriptions and concierge services. The decision has provoked customer backlash, GM has shut down attempted retrofits, and observers warn it could affect competition, data ownership and investor sentiment as rollout continues across 40+ models.
