UK Ministers Consider Texas-Style Prison Reforms

UK ministers are considering a Texas-style points system for prisoners, allowing them to earn credits for good behaviour and participation in rehabilitation programs to reduce their sentences. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood plans to visit Texas later this year to understand how the state successfully lowered its prison population and reoffending rates through such reforms. Currently, the UK prison population has reached a record high of 88,521, prompting the government to implement emergency early release measures for certain low-risk offenders. However, the system has faced criticism, as 37 prisoners were mistakenly released due to errors in their offense classifications. The potential adoption of the points system in England and Wales aims to address overcrowding and rethink sentencing rules, though its success may depend on sufficient funding. Experts warn that without financial backing, the initiative could be ineffective.
