The Summary Case Management (SCM) Pilot, initiated in September 2022, has demonstrated significant success in expediting court processes in Scotland, particularly for domestic abuse cases. Evaluations revealed that over 500 summary trials were resolved without needing to go to court in pilot locations, leading to approximately 18,000 witnesses, including 11,000 police officers, not being unnecessarily cited. The initiative promotes early evidence disclosure and proactive engagement between parties, which can lead to quicker resolutions and reduced trauma for victims. Following the pilot's success in Dundee, Hamilton, Paisley, Glasgow, and Perth, it will now be implemented nationwide. If applied across all courts from the beginning, it is estimated that an additional 3,300 trials could have been avoided, further decreasing the backlog. Sheriff Principal Aisha Anwar emphasized the collaborative effort among justice partners as key to the pilot's achievements.
