NYT Q1 2025: Revenue Rises, Subscribers Surge
The New York Times Company reported strong first-quarter 2025 results, surpassing analyst expectations with adjusted earnings per share of $0.41 and total revenue of $635.9 million, marking a year-over-year revenue increase of over 7%. The company added about 250,000 digital-only subscribers, raising its digital subscriber count to over 11 million and total subscribers, including print, to more than 11.6 million. Digital-only average revenue per user increased to $9.54, supported by price hikes and bundling strategies, as digital-subscription revenue rose over 14% to $335 million. The Athletic achieved a 28% revenue increase and reached profitability for the quarter. Management projected second-quarter subscription revenue growth of 8-10%, exceeding Wall Street estimates, and credited its diverse content and bundling for continued growth. The company also incurred $4.4 million in litigation costs related to its copyright lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI.
