Aldi has announced an £800 million investment to open 23 new stores across the UK this year, aiming to further expand its market presence after overtaking Morrisons to become the UK's fourth most popular supermarket in 2022. The company plans to refurbish 100 existing stores, expand distribution centers, and update its technology infrastructure. This investment is part of a larger two-year, £1.4 billion plan to boost sales and market share. Aldi's UK chief executive, Giles Hurley, emphasized that their focus is on growth rather than market share, despite the competition with other supermarkets like Lidl and Asda. Additionally, Aldi has committed nearly £100 million to reduce prices on 300 items to help ease cost-of-living pressures for consumers. Aldi also has plans for significant expansion in the U.S., with a $9 billion investment to add 800 new stores by 2028.
