Israel's Netanyahu Supports Ben-Gvir's Death Penalty Bill for Palestinian Prisoners
Israel's Knesset Security Committee has approved a controversial bill proposed by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that would impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners accused of attacks against Israelis. The bill, supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, allows the death penalty to be imposed by a majority of judges with no possibility of commutation, targeting those who cause the death of Israeli citizens out of racist motives or hatred. The legislation is set for a first reading in the Knesset and could become law pending further approval. The move has drawn strong condemnation from Palestinian rights groups, warning it could escalate violence and worsen prison conditions for the over 10,000 Palestinians held in Israeli custody. Netanyahu's backing was confirmed by Gal Hirsch, coordinator for hostages and missing persons, who had previously opposed the bill due to concerns over live hostages but withdrew opposition after hostages were released as part of a ceasefire deal brokered under President Donald Trump. The bill reflects a hardline approach by Israel's right-wing government amid ongoing tensions and violence in the region.
