Wilmington Airport Surpasses 660,000 Passengers As Avelo Expands Routes

Wilmington International Airport (ILM) has experienced remarkable growth, with seating capacity increasing by 66% over three years, making it the fastest-growing airport in the U.S. This growth is driven by new airlines such as Avelo, Breeze, and JetBlue beginning service, expanded routes, and larger planes from existing carriers, resulting in nonstop flights increasing from nine to 29. Avelo Airlines, which began service at ILM in February 2023, has transported over 660,000 passengers through mid-2025, with Florida destinations dominating its top routes. The airport's rise is attributed to Wilmington's strong business market, popularity as a leisure destination, and amenities like low parking fees, shorter security lines, and a luxury motorcoach connection to Philadelphia International Airport. Despite protests against Avelo for carrying out deportation flights, the airline continues to expand and support regional connectivity. Airport officials emphasize collaboration with local stakeholders and ongoing efforts to improve accessibility, such as joining the Sunflower Network for travelers with hidden disabilities.
