Sweden Urges EU to Designate Iranian IRGC Terrorist

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has urged the European Union to officially designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization following a series of attacks on Israeli targets in Sweden, which Stockholm attributes to Iranian influence. The Swedish intelligence agency, SAPO, has claimed that Iran has recruited members from Swedish criminal gangs to execute these violent acts, a charge denied by Tehran. Kristersson emphasized the need for a unified EU response to the IRGC’s activities, highlighting its destabilizing role in both the Middle East and Europe. The call for action follows increased attacks, including gunfire directed at the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. While the EU currently imposes sanctions on the IRGC, a terrorist designation requires unanimous agreement among member states, complicating the process. This proposal aligns with previous parliamentary support in Sweden and growing pressure from several EU countries advocating for a terrorist classification of the IRGC.
