Fire Destroys Geary High School Gym, Classes Canceled

A fire broke out on Saturday night at Geary High School in Oklahoma, severely damaging the historic gymnasium and prompting the cancellation of classes. The blaze, which began around 10 p.m., spread to other parts of the school, including restrooms and a cafeteria, resulting in substantial smoke and water damage. Over two dozen fire departments responded to the scene, but the gym was deemed too dangerous to salvage and had to be torn down on Sunday. Community members expressed deep sadness over the loss, particularly former students who shared emotional memories tied to the gym, which hosted the nation's oldest wrestling tournament. Superintendent Sean Buchanan announced that students will not return to school until later in the week as plans are being made for a safe resumption. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
