The Tropicana Hotel, a historic Las Vegas landmark and the last true mob-era casino on the Strip, was imploded in a spectacular display early Wednesday morning, including fireworks and a drone show. This event marks the first casino implosion in Las Vegas in nearly a decade, as the city prepares to construct a new $1.5 billion baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics. The Tropicana, which opened in 1957 and was known for its opulence and ties to organized crime, closed its doors in April after 67 years of operation. Historian Geoff Schumacher noted that Las Vegas has turned these demolitions into grand spectacles since Steve Wynn pioneered televised implosions in 1993. With the Tropicana's destruction, only the Flamingo casino remains from the mob era, although its original structure has been completely rebuilt since the 1990s. The Tropicana was a frequent haunt of the Rat Pack and its legacy has solidified its place in Las Vegas history.
