UK Small Boat Migrant Arrivals Surge 46% in 2025
In 2025, a record 28,076 migrants have crossed the English Channel to Britain in small boats, a 46% increase from the previous year, intensifying pressure on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Labour government to address immigration policies. Public concern over immigration has surged, with frequent anti-migrant protests outside hotels housing asylum seekers, especially following a court order to remove asylum seekers from a hotel in Epping. The Starmer administration has pledged to phase out the use of hotels for migrant accommodation by 2029 and announced reforms to speed up asylum applications and reduce a backlog of over 100,000 cases, aiming to restore order to what Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described as a chaotic system. Right-wing opposition, led by Nigel Farage of Reform UK, advocates for mass deportations, withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights, and the construction of large detention centers. Migrants continue to attempt dangerous Channel crossings despite efforts by French police to block them, with many families and children involved, raising humanitarian concerns especially as weather conditions worsen. A bilateral 'one in, one out' agreement between the UK and France allows for some migrants arriving by boat to be returned to France within three days, part of ongoing efforts to manage the crisis.
