Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station in Kolkata, has been suspended following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Mondal was arrested on September 14 for allegedly tampering with evidence and delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR), and he remains in CBI custody. The suspension was mandated under West Bengal government service rules, as any government employee in custody for over 48 hours is automatically suspended. Following the scandal, the West Bengal government has also removed several senior officials, including the police chief and key health department leaders, in response to protests from junior doctors. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front has called for further discussions with the state government to resolve ongoing issues stemming from the case. The situation has led to widespread strikes among junior doctors, highlighting the unrest in the medical community.
