Sinn Féin Backs Catherine Connolly in 2025 Ireland Presidential Race

Sinn Féin has officially endorsed Independent TD Catherine Connolly in her bid to become the next President of Ireland, aiming to prevent Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil from returning to the Áras. The party, led by Mary Lou McDonald, emphasized that Connolly represents a chance to elect a president who champions a United Ireland, neutrality, human rights, and economic justice. Connolly, who has also gained support from the Labour Party, Social Democrats, Green Party, People Before Profit, and other independents, expressed gratitude for Sinn Féin's backing and stressed her commitment to serve all Irish people regardless of political affiliation. Connolly has a long political career, including serving as the first female Leas Ceann Comhairle and holding various roles since her election to Galway City Council in 1999. Other candidates in the presidential race include Jim Gavin for Fianna Fáil and Heather Humphreys for Fine Gael. Sinn Féin's support is seen as a strategic move to consolidate left and centre-left support and present a united front in the upcoming 2025 presidential election.
