FDA Approves Fourth Natural Food Dye, Urges Red No. 3 Phase-Out
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gardenia (Genipin) Blue, a natural food color derived from the gardenia fruit, marking the fourth natural dye authorized under the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative to replace synthetic, petroleum-based dyes in food products. This new blue dye can be used in sports drinks, flavored non-carbonated water, fruit drinks, ready-to-drink teas, and candies, expanding the options available to food manufacturers aiming to phase out artificial colorants. The FDA, under the guidance of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., encourages the food industry to voluntarily eliminate synthetic dyes like FD&C Red No. 3 ahead of the current 2027 deadline, emphasizing the goal to protect children's health by reducing exposure to synthetic chemicals. Approximately 40% of food companies, including major brands like General Mills, Hershey, and Kraft Heinz, have committed to removing artificial dyes from their products as part of this voluntary transition. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary highlighted the expedited approval process as a demonstration of the agency’s commitment to this public health objective. These efforts reflect a broader federal strategy to promote healthier food options by replacing chemical dyes with safe, natural alternatives.
