Ford Motor Co. has agreed to pay up to $165 million in penalties to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for delayed and incomplete recalls of faulty rear-view cameras. This penalty is the second-largest in the agency's history, following Takata's $1 billion fine for defective airbags. The settlement requires an upfront payment of $65 million, along with $45 million for compliance improvements, and an additional $55 million may be required if further terms are not met. The recall impacts over 600,000 vehicles, including popular models such as the F-150 and Mustang, due to rear-view cameras showing blank or distorted images. Ford must also enhance its safety data analytics, develop a testing lab, and undergo a review of all its recalls from the past three years. An independent third party will oversee Ford's compliance to ensure all safety obligations are met.
