Massachusetts Bookstore Hosts LGBTQ+ Wedding Marathon Amid Supreme Court Marriage Review
In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's consideration of a petition to overturn the 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, All She Wrote Books, a queer-owned bookstore in Somerville, Massachusetts, is hosting a "wedding marathon" on August 30. The event offers LGBTQIA+ couples the opportunity to have an hour-long private ceremony with a Justice of the Peace, professional photography, cake, a wedding gift, and legal guidance for $500. This initiative, named "Love Can’t Wait Another Day," aims to provide a quick and affordable way for couples to marry amid fears that marriage equality could be rolled back. The petition was brought forth by Kim Davis, a former county clerk who previously refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, challenging the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has warned that the Supreme Court might send marriage rights back to the states and encouraged unmarried gay couples to marry soon. The bookstore owner, Christina Pascucci-Ciampa, emphasized the urgency and community need for such events, highlighting the importance of making marriage official while the right still stands.
