Arizona Veterinarians Warn Rising Rattlesnake Dog Bites Endanger Pets

Animal officials in Arizona have reported a recent increase in rattlesnake bites among dogs, urging pet owners to seek immediate veterinary care if their pet is bitten. Murphy, a 12-year-old Chihuahua from Gold Canyon, was bitten in his backyard and treated successfully with anti-venom at the Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center, highlighting the importance of rapid intervention. Veterinarians recommend using a short leash, avoiding dense brush, and staying on trails during hikes to reduce the risk of bites. Signs of rattlesnake bites in pets include puncture wounds, swelling, lethargy, seizures, and difficulty breathing, and immediate medical attention is critical to prevent life-threatening complications. Officials also advise calmly backing away from rattlesnakes if encountered, as one snake often indicates others nearby.
