Eighteen Indicted in Arizona Smuggling Operation

Eighteen members of a human smuggling ring based in Yuma, Arizona, have been indicted on multiple charges, including conspiracy to harbor and transport illegal aliens. The group, known as La Mesa, is reportedly linked to the Mexican criminal organization Los Rusos and is accused of smuggling hundreds of undocumented immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. Carlos Moreno-Serrano, 24, is identified as the leader, with other members responsible for organizing smuggling operations and managing logistics. Following arrests, the group adapted by transporting smaller groups of immigrants to evade law enforcement, employing intimidation tactics against members who were arrested. Each defendant faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 if convicted. The investigation was supported by U.S. Border Patrol and other agencies after several drivers were apprehended.
