Chargers Sign Veteran WR Keenan Allen for 2025 Season
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen to a one-year deal ahead of the 2025 NFL season, marking his return to the team that originally drafted him in 2013. Allen, who ranks second in franchise history for receptions and receiving yards, spent the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears, where he recorded 70 catches for 744 yards and seven touchdowns. His return follows the surprise retirement of former Chargers receiver Mike Williams, filling a veteran leadership gap in a young receiving corps that includes Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and rookie Tre' Harris. While Allen is expected to initially secure a WR2 role, questions remain about how he will fit in with McConkey, who excelled as a slot receiver in his rookie year, and whether Allen can maintain efficiency and a full-time role given his age and competition from emerging receivers. Allen's experience and target-commanding ability are considered valuable assets for the Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert, although his yards-per-target and production efficiency declined somewhat last season. The signing has drawn attention around the NFL, including speculation about other teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Allen has publicly expressed no interest in joining other teams, focusing instead on his reunion with the Chargers.
