US Sanctions Four Cartel Leaders Linked to Fentanyl, Human Trafficking

The Trump administration's Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against four individuals associated with La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM), a Mexican drug cartel linked to fentanyl trafficking and human smuggling. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the commitment to combat violent drug cartels, noting that these sanctions freeze assets and require financial institutions to report dealings with the sanctioned individuals. In addition, the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) published a report detailing the extensive financial networks supporting the fentanyl trade, primarily involving actors from Mexico and China. The report highlighted that the fentanyl trade is a multibillion-dollar enterprise, relying on sophisticated money laundering schemes and various transaction methods to facilitate illegal activities. The U.S. government's ongoing crackdown includes offering rewards for information leading to the arrest of cartel leaders and the designation of such organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
