Shelters Waive Fees for June Pet Adoption Events

Animal shelters across California and other states are waiving adoption fees in June as part of efforts like California Adopt-a-Pet Day to reduce shelter overcrowding and encourage pet adoption. The San Diego Humane Society, which is currently over capacity with nearly 2,000 animals, is participating with fee waivers and extended hours to facilitate adoptions. In 2024, over 3,000 animals were adopted statewide during Adopt-a-Pet Day, and organizers aim to reach 5,000 adoptions this year with more than 150 shelters involved. Other shelters, including the City of Tyler Animal Shelter in Texas, are waiving fees in exchange for blanket donations, while San Antonio Animal Care Services offers free adoptions through June 8. Adopted pets are typically spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, with some shelters providing further support to help families retain their pets. These events seek to make adoption more accessible and highlight the ongoing need for permanent homes for shelter animals.
