Taiwan's Cabinet has approved an ambitious NT$284 billion (US$8.88 billion) budget to construct seven domestically-designed submarines over the next 14 years, reflecting a commitment to enhance defense capabilities against potential threats from China. Critics have expressed concerns regarding the decision to proceed with this funding before the prototype submarine, named Hai Kun, completes its sea trials, which are scheduled for next month. The program aims to bolster Taiwan's Indigenous Defence Submarine capabilities and promote national resilience in the Indo-Pacific region. Built by CSBC Corporation Taiwan, the Hai Kun submarine features advanced technology, including a Lockheed Martin combat system and US-made MK-48 torpedoes. While the initiative has garnered support for its defense implications, analysts have questioned the timing of the budget approval. The expansion of Taiwan's submarine fleet comes amid rising tensions with Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.
