Netflix Summoned Over 'IC 814' Hijacker Names

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix India's content head, Monika Shergill, amid controversy surrounding the series 'IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack.' The series, which depicts the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, has drawn criticism for its portrayal of the hijackers using Hindu pseudonyms like 'Bhola' and 'Shankar,' which some argue misrepresent historical facts and hurt religious sentiments. A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a ban on the series, alleging distortion of facts. Netflix has defended the series, stating it is based on publicly available resources and maintains historical accuracy. The government insists that content must respect national sentiments and cultural values. The series is directed by Anubhav Sinha and features a prominent cast including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur.
