PayPal, OpenAI to Integrate Payments in ChatGPT
PayPal has agreed to a major partnership with OpenAI to let users pay with PayPal inside ChatGPT beginning in 2026 by adopting OpenAI’s Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The integration will make PayPal merchants and catalogs discoverable to ChatGPT agents via an ACP server, let users use saved payment, shipping and contact information, and allow merchants to process payments without building new integrations. PayPal said the deal leverages its 434 million accounts, gives employees ChatGPT Enterprise access, and — combined with stronger-than-expected Q3 results — sent PayPal shares up about 9–10%. Separately, PayPal is integrating Mastercard’s Agent Pay into its wallet and piloting the Agent Pay Acceptance Framework so AI agents can complete card transactions securely using tokenization and passkeys. Together with prior AI partnerships, these moves aim to scale agentic commerce, reduce checkout friction, boost conversion and trust, and create new revenue streams for merchants, PayPal and OpenAI; industry executives say tying trusted payment rails and security standards to agent-initiated purchases could help mainstream AI-driven shopping.
