Perth Bears Confirmed as NRL's 18th Team for 2027 Season

The National Rugby League (NRL) is officially expanding to include a Perth-based team, set to enter the competition in 2027 as the 18th franchise, ahead of Papua New Guinea's planned 2028 entry. This marks a significant return of rugby league to Western Australia, reviving the legacy of the Western Reds and North Sydney Bears, with the new club adopting the Bears' red and black colors and playing home games at Perth's HBF Park and occasionally at North Sydney Oval. The Western Australian government is investing over $65 million to support the team, with the NRL owning the club for the first five years before transitioning to member ownership. NRL chairman Peter V'landys emphasized the team's potential immediate competitiveness due to its affiliation with North Sydney, which provides established pathways and resources.
