UN Warns Sudan War Escalates With Mass Atrocities, Starvation

The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has issued a dire warning about the ongoing civil war, emphasizing that the conflict is intensifying with devastating consequences for civilians. Since the outbreak in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), tens of thousands have died and over 13 million people have been displaced, marking it as the world's largest forced displacement crisis. The report highlights the escalating use of heavy weaponry in populated areas, deliberate blocking and looting of humanitarian aid, and severe sexual and gender-based violence, including gang rape and sexual slavery, predominantly in RSF-controlled camps. Hospitals and aid convoys have been targeted, exacerbating famine conditions, especially in Darfur, with incidents such as the bombing of a UN convoy and attacks on hospitals causing civilian casualties. The mission calls for international action including an arms embargo and accountability for human rights violations, warning that the conflict has evolved from a political crisis into a grave human rights emergency with no resolution in sight.
