Portsmouth Man Sentenced 20 Months for Racially Aggravated Mosque Assault
Callum Mcinally, 29, from Southsea, Portsmouth, was sentenced to 20 months in prison following a racially and religiously aggravated assault outside the Jami Mosque on Victoria Road North. On August 31, Mcinally verbally abused a group of men, women, and children, punched a man in the chest, kicked a prayer mat, and later threatened people with a knife before discarding it and fleeing the scene upon police arrival. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges including common assault, harassment, and threatening with a blade. Authorities condemned his actions as hate crimes that shocked the community, emphasizing that such behavior will not be tolerated and that offenders will be brought swiftly to justice. Police and community leaders continue to work together to strengthen responses to hate-related incidents and repair community cohesion. The Crown Prosecution Service successfully applied a hate crime uplift during sentencing, underscoring the commitment to robust legal action against hate crimes.
