Florida Deploys AI Rabbits to Trap Invasive Pythons
The Burmese python invasion in Florida's Everglades has led to declines of up to 99% in native wildlife populations such as raccoons, opossums, bobcats, and rabbits. In response, the South Florida Water Management District is deploying solar-powered robotic rabbits equipped with AI-powered cameras, realistic heat signatures, movement, and scent to lure and detect pythons for removal. These advanced decoys join other control strategies, including the annual Florida Python Challenge, professional snake hunters, and advanced tracking technologies. Experts caution that the effectiveness of robot rabbits depends on how well they mimic real prey, as pythons use multiple senses to hunt. Since 2000, over 19,000 pythons have been removed, but the snakes continue to threaten the Everglades' ecosystem and water resources. The crisis highlights ongoing environmental challenges in the region, including invasive species, pollution, and climate change.
