On August 1, a retaining wall at the Sunkishala project near Nagarjuna Sagar collapsed, raising serious concerns about safety standards in large-scale infrastructure projects. Fortunately, the incident occurred during a shift change, preventing any casualties. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has formed a committee to investigate the cause, with preliminary reports suggesting that heavy inflows into the reservoir contributed to the collapse. The construction firm Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd will bear the costs for reconstruction, estimated at Rs 20 crore. The Sunkishala project, which is vital for water supply to Hyderabad, continues to face scrutiny over alleged negligence and safety oversights in its management. Amidst ongoing concerns, all gates of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project have been lifted to manage the increased water levels following heavy rains.
