Thai Cabinet Approves Second Phase of High-Speed Rail to China by 2030

Thailand's cabinet has approved the second phase of the China-Thailand high-speed railway project, which will connect Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, with an expected completion date of 2030. This 357-kilometer extension will facilitate freight movement and enhance travel between Bangkok and Yunnan, China, via Laos. The investment for this phase is approximately $10 billion, and construction is set to begin after fiscal year 2025. The project aims to create a seamless travel experience, significantly reducing travel time between key cities. Despite ongoing construction challenges in the first phase, which is about 36% complete, the government remains committed to advancing this infrastructure initiative. The approval comes as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra prepares for her official visit to China to strengthen economic ties.
